How to Migrate from Google Password Manager to VaultKeepR

Use the steps below to export from Google Password Manager and import locally in VaultKeepR. Keep the source vault until you have checked the imported entries.

  1. Open Chrome and go to Settings > Autofill and Passwords.
  2. Click Google Password Manager.
  3. Go to Settings > Export Passwords.
  4. Confirm device lock and save CSV.
  5. In VaultKeepR, open Settings → Data → Import and select the file. Parsing happens locally; nothing is uploaded.

The VaultKeepR app reads the export on your device without uploading the import file. Vault data is encrypted with XChaCha20-Poly1305 before synchronization.

Storage operators receive ciphertext, but metadata remains visible. Availability depends on storage services, IPFS gateways and pinning. A compromised device can expose keys or plaintext. The threat model describes these limits.

Your source manager’s storage model and recovery policy are separate from this import procedure. VaultKeepR synchronizes ciphertext through IPFS and other configured storage services. This does not eliminate offline attacks against a stolen vault or the need to protect your devices and backups.

The import runs in the VaultKeepR app on your device:

  • The CSV file is read locally to map fields into vault entries.
  • The imported vault is encrypted on device before synchronization.
  • If you enable sync, storage services receive the encrypted vault, not the export file.

An unencrypted export contains plaintext credentials. Use a trusted, updated device and keep temporary files out of shared or synchronized folders.

Check entry counts, sample credentials and important fields in VaultKeepR before deleting the export or a temporary list. Keep the source vault until these checks are complete. Deleting a file or emptying the trash does not guarantee physical erasure, particularly on SSDs or in cloud backups.

What export formats does VaultKeepR support?

Section titled “What export formats does VaultKeepR support?”

This guide uses a CSV export from Google Password Manager. Check the import preview and transferred fields before confirming the import.

Can VaultKeepR help me recover my master password?

Section titled “Can VaultKeepR help me recover my master password?”

VaultKeepR cannot reset your master password or decrypt your vault for you. Configure fragmented recovery before you lose access. It requires the recovery identifier, the encrypted vault or its manifest, and the configured quorum: 3 valid fragments out of 5 in the apps. Test the procedure with a test vault; it does not guarantee recovery if the required material is lost.
