Mullvad VPN and VaultKeepR: What You Should Know

Important clarification: Mullvad is a VPN service. It does not store passwords and does not manage a password vault, so there is no vault to export from Mullvad and no direct migration path from Mullvad to VaultKeepR. This page is not a migration guide in the usual sense — it explains what applies and what does not.

  1. There is nothing to export: Mullvad accounts are identified by a numbered account token, and the service holds no password vault data.
  2. If you currently store credentials in another password manager (Bitwarden, LastPass, 1Password, KeePass, …), follow that manager’s specific guide on this site to export and import into VaultKeepR.
  3. If you start fresh, VaultKeepR can be used without an email address: create a vault in the VaultKeepR app with a biometric passkey, and a Smart Account is generated automatically in the background.
  4. Keep your Mullvad account number safe: it is a sensitive credential on its own. Storing it inside a password manager vault (e.g. VaultKeepR) is a reasonable practice once your vault exists.

When you import a CSV or JSON export from another password manager, it is parsed 100% locally in your browser. The file is never sent to our servers or stored in any database. The data is encrypted on your device using XChaCha20-Poly1305 before synchronization.

Unlike VPN providers — Mullvad included — VaultKeepR is not a network service you connect through. It is a password manager: your credentials are encrypted on your local hardware and distributed peer-to-peer across the IPFS network. With no central vault server to breach, your credentials are protected by cryptographic sovereignty.

Can I replace Mullvad VPN with VaultKeepR?
Section titled “Can I replace Mullvad VPN with VaultKeepR?”

No. They solve different problems. Mullvad protects your network traffic; VaultKeepR stores your credentials. The two can be used together without any interaction between them.

What export formats does VaultKeepR support?
Section titled “What export formats does VaultKeepR support?”

VaultKeepR accepts standard unencrypted CSV and JSON database exports from major password managers. This allows our local processing engine to map fields and build your new local vault cleanly.

Can VaultKeepR help me recover my master password?
Section titled “Can VaultKeepR help me recover my master password?”

No. To maintain complete security, we do not have accounts, servers, or any way to view or reset your keys. For bulletproof recovery without trusting a central company, we recommend setting up Shamir Secret Sharing in our settings tab.
